The Uganda Orthodox Church yesterday Sunday confirmed the death of their leader, Bishop Yonah Lwanga. The man of God is said to have succumbed to cancer in Athens, Greece where he was undertaking treatment.
Bishop Yonah Lwanga’s death follows the death of other religious leaders such as Bishop Cyprian Lwanga and Sheikh Nuhu Muzaata.
Bishop Lwanga’s jurisdiction fell over Metropolitan of Kampala and All Uganda and in Central Africa under the Eastern Orthodox Church of Alexandria.
Lwanga was born on the 18th of July 1945 in Degeya. His father Obadiah Basajjakitalo was one of the pioneers of the Orthodox Church in Uganda.
The Bishop completed his basic education in Bulemezi and Kyadondo before pursuing a degree in Theology and Philosophy at the University of Athens. They ordained him a Deacon in 1981 and a priest in 1982
Bishop Lwanga then became a vicar Bishop over Bukoba in 1992. May 12th 1997 saw him named the Holy Synod of Metropolitan of Kampala and All Uganda.
The Orthodox Church leader has been a very well known critic of the regime. He went all the way to criticize it’s faults especially when abusing human rights.
In 2019, the Bishop came out to prophecy that Uganda will not have peace until the disbandment of the NRM government. He also added that it would soon collapse for disturbing the country so much.
