Central Nairobi sealed off ahead of Kenyan protests

Kenya’s security forces have blocked all major roads leading into central Nairobi, ahead of planned nationwide protests. Much of the city centre is deserted, with businesses shut and a heavy security presence on the streets. Some schools have advised students to stay at home. Hundreds of early-morning commuters and overnight travellers were stranded at checkpoints, some located more than 10km (six miles) from the city centre, with only a few vehicles allowed through. Within the city, roads leading to key government sites – including the president’s official residence, State House, and the Kenyan parliament – are barricaded with razor wire.In a statement issued on Sunday evening, the police said it was their constitutional duty to protect lives and property while maintaining public order. Monday’s protests, dubbed Saba Saba (Swahili for 7 July), commemorate the 1990s struggle for multiparty democracy in Kenya. These demonstrations have been organised primarily by young people, demanding good governance, greater accountability, and justice for victims of police brutality. They are the latest in a wave of anti-government protests that began last year. On 25 June, at least 19 people were killed and thousands of businesses looted and destroyed in a day of nationwide protests that were being held in honour of those killed in last year’s anti-tax protests. Recent demonstrations have turned violent, with reports of infiltration by “goons”, who are accused of looting and attacking protesters. Civil society groups allege collusion between these groups and the police – accusations the police have strongly denied. On Sunday, an armed gang attacked the headquarters of a human rights NGO in Nairobi. The Kenya Human Rights Commission had been hosting a press conference organised by women calling for an end to state violence ahead of Monday’s protests. This year marks the 35th anniversary of the original Saba Saba protests – a key moment that helped usher in multiparty democracy in Kenya after years of one-party rule. The response by the then government under President Daniel arap Moi was brutal. Many protesters were arrested, while at least 20 people were reportedly killed. Since then, Saba Saba has come to symbolise civic resistance and the fight for democratic freedom in Kenya.

The 2025 Buganda Masaza Cup resumed over the weekend with Match-day two at various playgrounds Ssese stunned record competition winners Gomba 1-0 in Kabulasoke on Sunday with Fahad Bukenya scoring the all important goal in the epic Bulange Group game. Bashir Mobin was sent off as Ssese finished with a man less. Gomba remains winless this term having lost both of their opening two Masaza Cup games putting pressure on head coach Simon Ddungu alias Dunga. In the same group, Busiro salvaged a late point against Buddu in a 1-1 stalemate at Sentama while Buluuli and Busujju shared spoils in a 1-1 draw. At Sentema, Kanyike Muhammad gave Buddu the lead in the 23rd minute before Wabuzibu Eric’s late strike secured at least a point for Busiro. Buddu moves to four points same as Busujju, Ssese three while five time winners Gomba are pointless. In Masengere group, Buweekula shared spoils with Bugerere in a goalless stalemate in Mubende while Bulemeezi held Mawokota in another goalless draw on Sunday. Mawokota is now on four points while Kyaddondo and Buvuma are both on three points. Buweekula and Bulemeezi have managed just a point each. Masaka Health Officials Demand Dedicated Court to Tackle Worsening Sanitation Crisis

Masaka city health authorities want a dedicated court and magistrate to handle public health issues, particularly targeting people without latrines and those who indiscriminately dump garbage, so that they can be punished. According to health reports released for the city’s two divisions, the level of filth among residents has significantly increased. A study revealed that the prevalence of diarrhea among children under five has risen sharply — from 9% in the 2023/2024 financial year to 20% in 2025 — all attributed to the worsening sanitation situation. The report further showed that handwashing practices have declined: in Kimaanya-Kabonera Division, the rate dropped from 73% in 2023/24 to 39% in 2025, while in Nyendo-Mukungwe Division it declined from 52% to 49% in the same period. Madrine Kikomeko, the health inspector for Kimaanya-Kabonera Division, said they are tired of pleading with residents to build latrines, as many continue to ignore the call, leaving the city dirty and full of waste scattered everywhere. She lamented that even when they apprehend people who refuse to build latrines or who dump waste in the city and take them to court, most of the cases collapse due to lack of officers to follow through, which emboldens the offenders because of the absence of clear laws or dedicated judicial attention. Now, they are asking for a magistrate dedicated solely to public health cases, hoping that this will create accountability and encourage people to care about their own health and sanitation. However, Centenary Radio spoke to the Masaka city health officer, Dr. Patrick Kasendwa, who said the city’s existing court and magistrate already handle such cases, but blamed health workers themselves for not preparing their cases well enough for prosecution. Meanwhile, Masaka city Mayor Florence Namayanja has warned residents still constructing pit latrines in the city that they need to adopt waterborne toilets instead, saying the city needs modern sanitation facilities to improve public hygiene.

Ntamu Kalinzi Distributes 50,000 Passion Fruit Seedlings to Youth in Bukoto Central to Boost Agriculture

A total of 50,000 passion fruit seedlings have been distributed to youths in Bukoto Central with the goal of empowering them to become more productive and improve their livelihoods. Alex Kalinzi Ntamu, the Second Deputy of the Kinyomo clan and also a political aspirant for the Bukoto Central parliamentary seat in the 2026 elections, spearheaded the initiative. He explained that the effort aims to reach every youth in Bukoto Central with tangible support to uplift their lives through agriculture. Ntamu criticized the government for neglecting agriculture in its recent policies, noting that many farmers find it difficult to benefit from the crops they grow due to lack of investment in the sector. Speaking during a meeting with youths from Buyaga village in Kyanamukaaka Sub-county, Masaka District, where he distributed the seedlings, Kalinzi emphasized his commitment to agriculture as a tool for transforming young people’s lives. He urged the government to allocate more funds from programs such as PDM (Parish Development Model) and Emyooga towards purchasing agricultural inputs that can directly benefit the people. Ntamu further revealed that his main objective is to ensure that young people remain engaged in productive activities rather than idling. He highlighted that passion fruit farming can help them save money, which can later be used to buy land and invest in long-term ventures like coffee farming. Some of the beneficiaries expressed concerns about the challenges they still face, especially drought. They called for support with water pumps to help them irrigate their crops and ensure better yields.

Kyagulanyi, Ssenyonyi, Rubongoya re-elected unopposed for another 5 years

Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine has been sworn in as the president of the National Unity Platform (NUP) for another five years. The swearing-in ceremony was held at the NUP Leadership School at Kamwokya, where the party held its first delegates’ conference under the new leadership of Kyagulanyi. In his address after the swearing-in, Kyagulanyi thanked everybody who had participated in the process. He said up to the last minute, they didn’t know that the delegates’ conference would be held today because of the environment of intimidation they operate under. “We have just held our delegates’ conference; we have just reconstituted our national executive committee, and we are up and running. I want to congratulate all the winners and all of you who participated in this election. It was noble for those who stepped aside, but it was even more noble and courageous for those challenged…so nobody is a loser in the National Unity Platform,” Kyagulanyi said. He asked those who have won to use their new positions to fight for good leadership in the country, especially in the coming general election. “Let’s go to work, we have a massive election ahead of us, and we have tough times ahead. And by the grace of God, we shall win…You did not hear people fighting against each other, exchanging profanities,” Kyagulanyi said. Speaking to the press after the end of the delegates’ conference, Joel Ssenyonyi, the leader of opposition in parliament (LoP), who has also just been re-elected as the party spokesperson, castigated the force that has been used against them by state security agencies, yet they are a registered political party. “We shall continue telling our people to keep peace, but there is always a limit to what people can accept. We are writing a protest letter to security agencies to ask them why they are mistreating us,” Ssenyonyi said. There are questions about the NUP delegates’ conference held today. The number of delegates who attended the meeting and the criteria used in choosing them are all unknown to most people. According to Ssenyonyi, their constitution allows for only 127 delegates, but he didn’t go into how they are chosen. Among the few people we have learnt that have been elected today include: David Lewis Rubongoya, who retains his position as secretary general. Both Rubongoya and Kyagulanyi have been elected unopposed. Ssenyonyi had to defeat Makindye West member of parliament Allan Ssewanyana to retain the position of party spokesperson. Kassanda South MP, Frank Kabuye, replaces his Mityana municipality counterpart, Francis Zaake, as the secretary for youth, while Akiso Benjamin replaces David Musiri as the head of institutions.

Masaka Court Clears Councilor Alice Nanungi of Alleged Conspiracy in Council Resolutions Forgery Case

In Masaka City, the court has acquitted Hon. Alice Nanungi, the councillor representing Nyendo-Mukungwe Division in the Masaka City Council, of charges related to conspiracy with former council clerk Luwaga Steven to forge council resolutions from meetings held on May 26, 2023, and August 24, 2023. Presiding over the case, Magistrate Kayiiza Abudallah ruled that the evidence presented by the prosecution was insufficient to prove that Hon. Nanungi conspired with Luwaga Steven to alter the council’s resolutions. As a result, he declared that Hon. Nanungi was not guilty. However, Luwaga Steven has been ordered to return to court on July 3, 2025, to face separate charges related to the alleged forgery of council resolutions, although the conspiracy charge involving Hon. Nanungi has been dropped. Hon. Nanungi’s legal representative, Sam Ssekyewa from Ssekyewa and Matovu Advocates, stated that the prosecution’s evidence clearly showed that Hon. Nanungi did not attend the council meetings in question—those held on May 26 and August 24, 2023—proving that the charges brought against her was baseless. Meanwhile, Hon. Alice Nanungi claimed that the charges against her were politically motivated. She stated that her involvement in supporting certain members of the Mayor’s council, particularly those from the National Unity Platform (NUP), led to political retaliation and false accusations intended to tarnish her reputation and fail her to contest in the general coming elections.
MP Mathias Mpuuga Distributes Over 10,000 Coffee Seedlings, Launches New Political Movement — Democratic Front

Parliament Commissioner and Member of Parliament for Nyendo-Mukungwe, Hon. Mathias Mpuuga Nsamba, have distributed over 10,000 coffee seedlings to farmers in Nyendo-Mukungwe Division as part of efforts to uplift their economic wellbeing. The coffee seedlings were given to residents from the areas of Kinyerere, Nyendo, and Katwadde. While handing over the seedlings, Mpuuga emphasized that it is the duty of leaders to work towards improving the lives of the people they serve. He noted that the coffee plants would serve as a long-term economic investment, enabling beneficiaries to generate sustainable income. He particularly urged the youth to take the initiative seriously by planting and caring for the seedlings, adding that he is committed to continuing support for such economic empowerment initiatives. Masaka City Woman MP, Hon. Juliet Kakande, reassured the beneficiaries that the coffee seedlings provided are of excellent quality and should not be taken for granted. She encouraged recipients to utilize the opportunity to escape poverty. During the event, Mpuuga Nsamba officially introduced to the people of Masaka the newly formed political organization known as the Democratic Front (DF). He stated that this time, they would not engage in confrontational political activism but would instead pursue change through lawful and structured means, following disillusioned with former allies who abandoned the cause for political change and instead pursued personal agendas, despite having initially been deeply involved in the struggle. He called on the people of Masaka to trust and rally behind the Democratic Front, built on strong principles, including environmental conservation, symbolized by the tree as a party’s emblem Notably, Mpuuga, along with other members of parliament including Juliet Kakande and Dr. Abed Bwanika of Kimaanya-Kabonera, have parted ways with the National Unity Platform (NUP) due to ongoing disagreements, and are now championing their newly launched political platform, the Democratic Front (DF). President Museveni Announces Government Plans to Amend Land Law to Curb Illegal Evictions

President Museveni Announces Government Plans to Amend Land Law to Curb Illegal Evictions President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has announced that the government is planning to amend the land law to address the issue of illegal evictions, where unscrupulous individuals force people off their land. Museveni made these remarks during the commemoration of Heroes Day held in Kaliiro Town Council, Lyantonde District. He expressed concern over the increasing cases of people being evicted from their land, blaming it on landowners who take advantage of the ignorance of tenants. Some landowners, he noted, hide behind other people and claim to have taken over the land due to unpaid ground rent (busuulu). To counter this, the president said government will introduce a law to have busuulu payments managed at the sub-county level. The president also praised the people of Lyantonde for their active involvement in farming and animal husbandry. However, he pointed out that one of the remaining challenges is the sharing of family wealth after the death of the head of the family. He advised families not to divide property like land, but rather to sell it and share the proceeds equally. The event began with prayers for the nation, led by religious leaders. The Catholic Bishop of Masaka Diocese Bishop Severus Jjumba prayed for the country’s leaders and all citizens, urging them to uphold peace under the national motto, “For God and My Country.” A total of 50 people received medals during the event — 41 men and 9 women. The ceremony was held under the theme: “The Legacy and Ideals of Our Heroes: A Memorable Inspiration.””
Arts Teachers Strike Enters Day Four amid Intimidation Reports

The strike by Arts teachers has entered its fourth day, with some of them reporting receiving threatening phone calls instructing them to abandon the industrial action or risk losing their jobs. The teachers, under their umbrella body — the Uganda Professional Humanities Teachers Union — began the strike last Friday to express dissatisfaction with their low salaries and demand the pay raise the government had earlier promised them. Robert Bwanika, the coordinator of the teachers union in the Greater Masaka region, stated that since the strike began, some teachers have been received intimidating calls, allegedly from security offices and district administrators, warning them to return to work or face dismissal. However, Bwanika emphasized that the union would not be deterred by those trying to undermine their cause. He urged the teachers to remain committed to their objectives. Bwanika said that before resorting to the strike, they had engaged various offices without success. He expressed surprise at the source of the threatening calls, saying some even originated from security offices and local government authorities. He insisted that their actions are within the law. Prior to the strike, the teachers had given the government a 90-day ultimatum to respond to their concerns. When that period elapsed without any action, they decided to lay down their tools and suspend teaching activities. Bwanika highlighted the financial struggles of Arts teachers, noting that diploma holders earn as little as UGX 600,000 while those with degrees earn around UGX 800,000 — an amount he described as inadequate given the high cost of living. He said many teachers can hardly sustain themselves or support their families. Kalungu East MP Francis Katabaazi Katongole also expressed support for the striking teachers, criticizing the government for what he called discriminatory salary enhancements. In the 2022/2023 financial year, the government increased salaries for science teachers — with degree holders now earning over UGX 3 million and diploma holders close to UGX 2 million. This, Katabaazi argued, has left Arts teachers feeling marginalized.
Postecoglou sacked by Spurs after Europa League win

Ange Postecoglou has been sacked as Tottenham manager 16 days after leading them to victory in the Europa League final. A 1-0 win over Manchester United in Bilbaobrought Spurs a first major trophy for 17 years. However, it came towards the end of their worst Premier League season, with the London club finishing 17th after losing 22 of their 38 matches. The Australian told fans “season three is better than season two” as they gathered at a victory parade to mark European success in his second campaign. But the 59-year-old’s time in north London has ended two years to the day after Spurs announced he would join them from Celtic on a four-year contract. Brentford boss Thomas Frank has been tipped as a leading contender to replace Postecoglou. Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola, Fulham’s Marco Silva, Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner and former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino – now managing the United States – are among the other candidates to have been considered. Spurs said in a statement Postecoglou would be remembered for delivering “one of the club’s greatest moments” in becoming only the third manager to win them a European trophy. But they added they could not base their decision on “emotions aligned to this triumph” and felt a change was necessary after a “review of performances”. Tottenham finished fifth in Postecoglou’s first season in charge before he kept his promise to provide silverware in his second year. “The opportunity to lead one of England’s historic football clubs and bring back the glory it deserves will live with me for a lifetime,” he said in a statement. “That night in Bilbao was the culmination of two years of hard work, dedication and unwavering belief in a dream. “There were many challenges to overcome and plenty of noise that comes with trying to accomplish what many said was not possible.” Of managers with 100 or more games in charge of the club, Postecoglou ranks with a 46.5% win percentage from 101 matches in all competitions (47 wins, 15 draws and 39 losses). Postecoglou pays price for slide in form Tottenham’s decision to sack the man who guided them to a first trophy since 2008 will divide opinion across their fanbase. He becomes the fourth Spurs manager – after Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo and Antonio Conte – to lose his job since Pochettino was sacked in November 2019, less than four months after taking them to the Champions League final. Former Australia boss Postecoglou’s reign began in spectacular fashion, despite the exit of the club’s all-time leading scorer Harry Kane to Bayern Munich. Spurs set the pace in the early stages of the 2023-24 Premier League season by taking 26 points from their first 10 games, with Postecoglou winning three consecutive manager of the month awards. But five defeats in their final seven matches cost them a spot in the Champions League 12 months ago, and things continued to unravel in 2024-25 after a slow start to the season. Postecoglou, who was initially praised for the attacking style he implemented, was forced to defend himself from criticism for sticking to his principles and had to contend with a catalogue of injuries to key players. Aside from their run to the Carabao Cup semi-finals, where they were thrashed 4-0 by Liverpool after taking a slender one-goal lead to Anfield, they have struggled in domestic competition. Since 6 November 2023, Spurs have collected 78 points from 66 top-flight games – the 16th best record in the Premier League over that time. While Tottenham scored 64 goals in the season just gone – as many as fourth-placed Chelsea and more than Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest in sixth and seventh – they conceded 65 with only Wolves and the relegated trio of Leicester City, Ipswich Town and Southampton conceding more. What did Postecoglou say? Postecoglou’s unwavering belief in himself and his forthright – sometimes blunt – approach has been a feature of his spell at Tottenham. He accused a reporter of discounting the impact of injuries on his side’s results after a 6-3 home defeat by Liverpool, and repeatedly insisted he would not alter his style. Postecoglou also publicly described Timo Werner’s performance as “not acceptable” after replacing him at half-time during a 1-1 Europa League draw at Rangers. There were elements of that abrasiveness in the statement his representatives released after his sacking, which read: “When I reflect on my time as manager of Tottenham Hotspur my overriding emotion is one of pride. “The opportunity to lead one of England’s historic football clubs and bring back the glory it deserves will live with me for a lifetime. “Sharing that experience with all those who truly love this club and seeing the impact it had on them is something I will never forget. “That night in Bilbao was the culmination of two years of hard work, dedication and unwavering belief in a dream. There were many challenges to overcome and plenty of noise that comes with trying to accomplish what many said was not possible. “We have also laid foundations that mean this club should not have to wait 17 more years for their next success. I have enormous faith in this group of players and know there is much more potential and growth in them. “I sincerely want to thank those who are the lifeblood of the club, the supporters. I know there were some difficult times but I always felt that they wanted me to succeed and that gave me all the motivation I needed to push on. “It’s important to acknowledge the hard working people at Spurs who gave me encouragement on a daily basis. “And finally, I want to thank those who were with me every day for the last two years. A fantastic group of young men who are now legends of this football club and the brilliant coaches who never once doubted we could do something special. “We are forever connected. Audere est Facere. Ange.” What did Tottenham say? Tottenham’s statement read: “Following a review of performances and
Former Zambian President Lungu dies aged 68

Zambia’s former President Edgar Lungu has died at the age of 68, his party has said in a statement. He had “been receiving specialized treatment in South Africa” for an undisclosed illness, the Patriotic Front (PF) added. Lungu led Zambia for six years from 2015, losing the 2021 election to the current President Hakainde Hichilema by a large margin. After that defeat he stepped back from politics but later returned to the fray. He had ambitions to vie for the presidency again but at the end of last year the Constitutional Court barred him from running, ruling that he had already served the maximum two terms allowed by law. In a short video, Lungu’s daughter Tasila said that the former head of state, who had been “under medical supervision in recent weeks”, died at a clinic in South Africa’s capital, Pretoria, at 06:00 (04:00 GMT) on Thursday. “In this moment of grief, we invoke the spirit of ‘One Zambia, One Nation’ – the timeless creed that guided President Lungu’s service to our country,” she added in an emotional statement. Lungu first became president in January 2015 after winning a special presidential election triggered by the death of Michael Sata. After completing Sata’s term, he won a further five years in power in 2016 taking just over 50% of the vote. But after six years at the helm, Lungu was blamed for a struggling economy and high unemployment. He lost in 2021 by close to a million votes with Hichilema tapping into widespread dissatisfaction among the electorate. He said he was retiring in the aftermath of the vote, but returned to frontline politics in 2023 as his successor’s popularity waned. “I am ready to fight from the front, not from the rear, in defence of democracy. Those who are ready for this fight, please come along with me, I am ready for anything,” Mr Lungu told supporters at the time. Lungu was a lawyer by training but enjoyed a meteoric rise in politics after winning a seat in parliament as a PF MP in 2011. He entered government as deputy minister in the vice-president’s office in that year and rose to become minister of home affairs in just over 12 months. He later became minister of defence and then justice. A close friend described Lungu as a “good foot-soldier, lawyer and politician, father, husband and grandparent”. Born on 11 November 1956, Lungu graduated with a law degree from the University of Zambia in 1981. He also underwent military training at the then Miltez army college in Kabwe. He later worked at Andre Masiye and Company Advocates, Barclays Bank, and Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines.
Tanzania has begun restricting total access to the social media platform “X” due to concerns over pornographic material

Speaking to Citizen TV, Information Minister Jerry Silaa said the decision was based on the platform’s failure to comply with Tanzania’s laws, cultural values, and online ethics guidelines. He specifically cited the sharing of sexually explicit content, including same-sex pornography, as a key reason for the restriction. “The content being shared on X is contrary to our laws, culture, customs, and traditions. X has permitted explicit sexual material, including same-sex pornographic content, which breaches our online ethics guidelines.” Minister Jerry Silaa Tanzanian users had reported restricted access to the platform over the past two weeks, although a full nationwide shutdown had not been confirmed until now. The move follows a period of political tension in the country, during which a government police account on X was reportedly hacked. Silaa also referenced a policy change made by X last year, in which the company announced it would allow the sharing of “consensually produced and distributed” adult content. This shift, according to the minister, prompted concern within the government and ultimately contributed to the current restrictions. The minister added that the Tanzanian government is applying similar measures across other platforms as part of a wider effort to regulate online content.
Donald Trump has signed a ban on travel to the US from 12 countries citing national security risks, according to the White House.

There are also seven additional countries whose nationals will face a partial travel restrictions. The US president said the list could be revised if “material improvements” were made and additional countries could be added as “threats emerge around the world”. This is the second time he has ordered a ban on travel from certain countries. He signed a similar order in 2017, during his first term in office. Which countries are affected? Trump has signed a proclamation banning travel to the US from nationals of 12 countries: Nationals from these countries will not be allowed to enter the US unless they qualify for an exception. There are an additional seven countries whose nationals face partial travel restrictions: Countries hit by the partial restrictions will not be able to travel to the US with certain visas. The ban takes effect on Monday at 12:01 (05:01 BST), a cushion that avoids the chaos that unfolded at airports nationwide when a similar measure took effect with virtually no notice eight years ago. No end date has been provided; the order calls for periodic review. Why has a ban been announced? The White House said these “common sense restrictions” would “protect Americans from dangerous foreign actors”. In a video posted to his Truth Social website, Trump said the recent alleged terror attack in Boulder, Colorado “underscored the extreme dangers” posed by foreign nationals who had not been “properly vetted”. Twelve people were injured in Colorado on Sunday when a man attacked a group gathering in support of Israeli hostages, throwing two incendiary devices and using a makeshift flamethrower. The man accused of carrying out the attack has been identified as an Egyptian national, but Egypt is not included on the list of banned countries. Trump has close ties with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who has in the past been described by the US president as his “favourite dictator”. Only two of the 19 countries are on the US government’s State Sponsors of Terrorism list – Iran, which has a full ban, and Cuba, which has partial travel restrictions. But national security is given as a partial reason for his choice of countries. In the proclamation, Trump said many of these countries listed have a “historic failure to accept back their removable nationals” for the US, as well as having “taken advantage” of the US by exploiting its visa system. He added that nationals from certain countries also “pose significant risks” of overstaying their visas. What exemptions are there? There are a number of people from affected countries who may still be able to enter the US due to a number of exceptions. The order does not apply to: In addition, the Secretary of State may grant exemptions to individuals on a “case-by-case” basis, if “the individual would serve a United States national interest”. What has been the reaction to the ban? Trump’s latest order, which is expected to face legal challenges, drew a swift response, at home and abroad. Somalia promised to work with the United States to address any security issues. In a statement, Somali ambassador to the US, Dahir Hassan Abdi, said his country “values its longstanding relationship” with America. Venezuela’s Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello warned that “being in the United States is a great risk for anyone, not just for Venezuelans”. The African Union, which represents all 55 countries on the African continent, called on the US to “engage in constructive dialogue with the countries concerned”. It appealed to the US to exercise its sovereign right to protect its borders and its citizens’ security “in a manner that is balanced, evidence-based, and reflective of the long-standing partnership between the United States and Africa”. The union said it remains concerned about the “potential negative impact of such measures”. Democrats were quick to condemn the move. “This ban, expanded from Trump’s Muslim ban in his first term, will only further isolate us on the world stage,” Pramila Jayapal, a Democrat congresswoman from Washington, says in a social media post. Another Democrat, congressman Don Beyer, says Trump “betrayed” the ideals of the US’ founders. Human rights groups have also criticised the ban. Amnesty International USA described it as “discriminatory, racist, and downright cruel”, while the US-based Human Rights First, called it “yet another anti-immigrant and punitive action taken” by the president. What happened last time? Trump ordered his original travel ban during his first term in the White House in 2017. It featured some of the same countries as his latest order, including Iran, Libya and Somalia. Critics called it a “Muslim ban” as the seven countries initially listed were Muslim majority, and it was immediately challenged in courts across the US. The White House revised the policy, ultimately adding two non-Muslim majority countries, North Korea and Venezuela. It was upheld by the Supreme Court in 2018. President Joe Biden, who succeeded Trump, repealed the ban in 2021, calling it “a stain on our national conscience.”

Middlesbrough has sacked head coach Michael Carrick after two-and-a-half years in charge.

The former England midfielder, 43, took over at the Championship side in October 2022 for his first role in management. He guided the team to a play-off finish in 2022-23 but they have missed out on the top six in the past two campaigns. Carrick’s assistants Jonathan Woodgate and his brother Graeme Carrick have also left the club. Boro spent much of the 2024-25 season challenging for a play-off spot but one win in their final six matches proved to be costly. They stayed in the hunt for a top-six place until the final game of the season but defeat at Coventry saw them finish 10th. His departure means that 17 of last season’s 24 Championship teams have changed manager since August last year. Ends
